Test Tab ( Insight Diagnostics Offline Edition only)

Insight Diagnostics provides the capability to test all the major pieces of hardware in the system. Test progress is displayed on the Status tab. Detailed test results are displayed on the Log tab.

Following are the three types of tests:

  1. Quick Test —Provides a predetermined script where a sample of each hardware component is exercised.

  2. Complete Test — Provides a predetermined script where each hardware component is fully tested.

  3. Custom Test— Provides the most flexibility in controlling the testing of a system. The Custom Test mode allows the you to specifically select the device, tests, and test parameters to run.

The following are two testing modes:

  1. Interactive— all tests run, some of which may require the user to respond to prompts

  2. Unattended— no user action is required, tests that require user action are not executed

You can configure and customize tests in attributes as:

  • Number of Loops— specifies the number of test cycles to perform the selected tests

  • Total Test Time— specifies the length of time given to conduct all selected tests

  • Stop on First Error—specifies that all testing will stop when the first error is encountered

  • Test Parameters— test parameters for each device are available in Custom testing

To begin the test:

  1. Select the Test tab

  2. Select the sub-tab of the Test Type to perform tests (Quick, Complete or Custom)

  3. Select the Test Mode (Interactive or Unattended)

  4. Choose how you want the test to be executed, either by a Number of Loops or by Total Test Time. When choosing to run the test over a specified number of loops, enter the number of loops to perform. If you want to have the diagnostic test for a specified time period, enter the amount of time in minutes.

    [NOTE: ]

NOTE: Testing will automatically stop, if one test loop has been completed, when the elapsed test time has reached the specified time limit.

  5. Select which devices (Quick and Complete tests) or which tests (Custom) to run

  6. To start the test, click Begin Testing

Until the tests are complete, the Status tab is in the selected state and the Test tab is disabled.

You can monitor the progress of the tests in the Status tab. Any errors that are detected are summarized in the Error Log.

To view all test failure information, select the Error Log.

To view the status of all the tests, select the Log tab.

Diagnose tab

The Diagnose feature of the Insight Diagnostics Offline Edition enables high system availability by performing various non-intrusive, in-depth system, and component checks.

The Diagnose feature of the Insight Diagnostics performs hardware diagnosis on the following devices:

  • Hard drives attached to Smart Array Controller

  • Power supplies that are deemed diagnosable

To start Hardware Diagnosis:

  1. Click the Diagnose tab.

  2. Select the device to diagnose:

    • Select All Devices to assess the health of all logical volumes and power supplies.

    • Select one or more specific logical volumes or power supplies to assess the health of the selected devices.

  3. Click Diagnose.

If the system does not have any logical volumes or power supplies that are diagnosable, the following message appears:

System does not have any diagnosable devices installed.

Status tab

The Status tab displays the status of the currently running Diagnose and applicable tests, currently running tests or the previous tests, if applicable. Red progress bar shows that the test has failed and a green progress bar shows that the test is successful.

Test status ( Insight Diagnostics Offline Edition only)

Test Status shows main progress bar, which displays the percent complete of the current set of tests as well as its duration information. A table below the progress bar displays statistics for each individual device. You can click Cancel to cancel the tests in progress.

[NOTE: ]

NOTE: Few of the tests might not get cancelled immediately. The status of such tests might appear as 'canceling' until the tests end.

After testing is complete, you can click Retest to re-run the set of tests without going back to the Test Selection page.

[NOTE: ]

NOTE: If you need to test only those devices again for which the test failed, perform a Custom test. You can specify the number of retries to perform in the parameter settings for each test.

The Status page also shows:

  • The individual tests that are running

  • The overall elapsed time

  • The individual elapsed time for each test

  • The current condition status of each test

Tests might have the following condition status:

  • Waiting — The test is waiting for other tests to complete before running

  • Running — The test is currently running

  • Passed — The test is passed and device is operating within specifications

  • Failed — The device failed the test or the test itself failed. The Status tab also shows the errors and steps that you must perform before the replacement of device.

  • Canceling — The test has received a cancel command and is trying to find a stopping point

  • Canceled — The test has been canceled and is no longer running

  • Abnormal Termination — The test terminated abnormally

The progress and status of offline quick, complete, or custom testing appears on Status tab.

Diagnose status

Diagnose Test Status also shows the following device-specific information:

  • Serial No. — It is the tracking number of devices like Hard Drives, Power Supply.

  • Accumulated Power-on-time — It is the total time during which the device remains powered on. For example:

Accumulated Power-on-time for Hard drive:2.0 months

  • Start Drive identity LED — Click this option to identify the specific hard drive, if it is SCSI drive, then amber LED blinks, if it is SAS/SATA drive, then blue LED turns on for a few seconds.

  • Stop Drive identity LED — Click this option to turn off the LED.

[NOTE: ]

NOTE: The warnings are purely informational related to the specific device. To view detailed information about the warnings, see the Diagnosis Log.

The progress and status of the Diagnose process appears on the Status tab when diagnose completes. The Device Diagnosis sections display device-specific details, test results, and details of each device.

Log tab

The Log tab consists of following views:

Integrated Management Log

The Integrated Management Log (IML) records system events, critical errors, power-on messages, memory errors, and any catastrophic hardware or software errors that typically cause a system to fail. The IML allows the manipulation of this data. Insight Diagnostics has the ability to add notes to, clear, and mark for repair items in the IML (on supported systems). The Integrated Management Log displays the following information:

  • The severity of the event

  • The class of the event.

  • The date and time that the event was last updated

  • The date and time that the event was initially added to the IML

  • The count of the event

  • The description of the event

The severity of the event and other information in the IML helps to quickly identify and correct problems, thus minimizing the downtime of server.

You can classify the severity of the events as:

  • Info — Presents general information about a system event

  • Repaired — Indicates that this entry has been repaired

  • Caution — Indicates that a non-fatal error condition has occurred

  • Critical / Failed — Indicates that a component of the system has failed

The IML has several capabilities to enhance the ability to identify, correct, and document server health.

The following features are supported:

  • Save Logs — when the Save IML Logs option is selected, saves the IML logs to to a file in HTML format

  • Clear Logs — when the Clear IML Logs option is selected, clears all IML entries

    [NOTE: ]

NOTE: Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends that you save the contents of the log to a file before clearing the log.

After the IML is cleared, a maintenance note event is added indicating the time and date that the log was last cleared.

  • Set selected items to 'Repaired' — Marks all selected entries as repaired

  • Add Maintenance Note — Add an event with a user specified description

    [NOTE: ]

NOTE: Maintenance Notes contains the severity of 'Info' and the class of 'Maintenance'.
