Using Insight Diagnostics from a Browser
HP Insight Diagnostics online edition allows you to view information from a Web
browser. Insight Diagnostics can be invoked from the system System Management
Homepage or from Systems Insight Manager.
Browser Requirements
The requirements are TCP/IP and one of the following browsers:

Firefox 1.5 or higher
-
Microsoft® Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher
The minimum browser requirements include support for tables, iframes,
JavaScript, CSS and full java development kit(jdk 1.1) support.
IMPORTANT: You must have all of the following
browser options enabled for the Web-enabled diagnostics to work properly:

Enable java
-
Enable JavaScript
-
Accept all cookies
Browsers not listed may or may not work correctly depending upon the specific
implementations of standard technologies.
Accessing Insight Diagnostics from the System Management Homepage
To run Insight Diagnostics locally, use the following URL: https://127.0.0.1:2381/
To run Insight Diagnostics remotely, use the URL: https://machine:2381/
where machine is the IP address of the remote machine or the computer name of
the remote machine under DNS.
Note: Notice that the URL is followed by 2381.
This is the port or socket number that the HP management agents use to
communicate with the browser. If this number is not specified, the browser
might attempt to connect to another web page if the managed server is running a
web server.
Accessing Insight Diagnostics from Insight Manager

From the Tools menu, go to the System page.

Select Insight Diagnostics from the Links tab. The Insight Diagnostics
home page is displayed.
Accessing Insight Diagnostics from the Windows Start Menu
-
Go to Start > HP System Tools > HP Insight Diagnostics Online Edition for
Windows.

Select HP Insight Diagnostics Online Edition for Windows.
Security
Web-based management agents running on Windows and Linux operating systems have
no default passwords. On a fresh install the administrator password, operator
password, and user passwords are configured during installation. For more
information, refer to the HP Insight Management Agents User Guide.
Logging In
The Login dialog box allows you to access any of the available Web agents. To
access the desired agent:

Navigate to https://hostname:2381 or https://system_ip_address:2381. The first time you navigate
to this link, a Security Alert dialog box may be displayed asking you to
indicate whether or not to trust the system. Click Yes.
Note: The Security Alert dialog box is specific
to Internet Explorer and should not appear in other browsers
Note: If you want to implement your own PKI or install your own
generated certificates into each managed device, you can install a Certificate
Authority Root Certificate into each browser to be used for management. If this
is implemented, the Security Alert dialog box should not be displayed. If the
alert is displayed when you do not expect it, you may have browsed to the wrong
device. You can refer to the online help in your browser for more information
about installing the Certificate Authority Root Certificate.

The Login page is displayed.
Note: If Anonymous access is enabled, the Login
page is bypassed and the System Management Homepage is displayed instead. Skip
to step 6.

Enter the appropriate username account.
-
Enter the correct password in the Password field.
-
Click OK.
The System Management Homepage is displayed.
- Click the Webapps tab.
- Click the HP Insight Diagnostics link in the Other Agents box.
Navigation
The Insight Diagnostics home page contains the following navigation tabs:
Survey, Diagnose, Status, Log, Admin and Help.
Survey Tab
The Survey tab allows you to view important system configuration information.
You can view information from a variety of categories in a Summary view or an
Advanced view. Survey collects the current system information each time Insight
Diagnostics is loaded.
Survey information captures can be scheduled and historical captures can be
compared to determine changes in a system's confuration over time.
Diagnose Tab
The Diagnose feature of the HP Insight Diagnostics enables high
system availability by performing various non-intrusive, in-depth system and
component checks.
The HP Insight Diagnostics Diagnose feature performs Hardware Diagnosis on the following devices:

Hard drives attached to HP Smart Array Controller
-
Power supplies that are deemed diagnosable
To start Hardware Diagnosis:
-
Click the Diagnose tab
-
Select the device to diagnose
-
Select All Devices to assess the health of all logical volumes and power
supplies.
-
Select one or more specific logical volumes or power supplies to assess the
health of the selected devices.
-
Click the Diagnose button
If the System does not have any logical volumes or power supplies that are
diagnosable, the following message appears:
System does not have any diagnosable devices installed.
Status Tab
The Status tab will display information about currently running Diagnose tests
and allow the user to review the results of these tests upon completion
Diagnose Status
The main progress bar displays the percent complete of the current set of tests. Failure of the test is indicated by red colored progress bar and test pass is indicated by green color. A table below the progress bar displays statistics for each individual device. Tests in progress can be cancelled by pressing the Cancel button.
Note: Due to the nature of some tests, the tests may not cancel immediately. During this time, the status of the tests will be 'canceling' until the test can reach a stopping point.
After testing has completed, the Retest button allows you to run the last set of tests that were executed again. This allows you to re-run the set of tests without having to go back to the diagnose selection page.
Tests can have the following condition status:
- Waiting - The test is waiting for other tests to complete before running
- Running - The test is currently running
- Passed - The test is passed and device is operating within specifications
- Failed - The device failed the test or the test itself failed. The Status Tab also shows the errors and steps to be performed before the replacement of device.
- Canceling - The test has received a cancel command and is trying to find a stopping point
- Canceled - The test has been canceled and is no longer running
- Abnormal Termination - The test terminated abnormally
It also shows the following device-specific information:
- Serial No. - It is the tracking number of devices like Hard Drives,Power Supply.
- Accumulated Power-on-time - It is the total time during which the device remains powered on. Example:Accumulated Power-on-time for Hard drive:2.0 months
- Start Drive identity LED - Click this button to identify the specific hard drive,if it is SCSI drive then amber LED blinks ,if it is SAS/SATA drive then blue LED turns on for a few seconds.
- Stop Drive identity LED - Click this button to turn off the LED.
Note: Warnings: The Warnings are purely informational related to the specific device.To view detailed information, refer to Diagnosis Log
Log Tab
The Log tab shows a variety of system logs in log tab views. Each view provides information about a log type along with UI button commands to handle the log. Besides these buttons, there is the Save All Logs command for the user to conveniently combine and save all logs across the tabs into a single file.
Integrated Management Log (IML)
If supported by your system, the IML logs post errors and diagnostic errors. Insight Diagnostics has the ability to add notes to and mark for repair the logged items.The IML records system events, critical errors, power-on messages, memory errors, and any catastrophic hardware or software errors that typically cause a system to fail.
Diagnosis Log
Detailed results of Diagnose appear in the Diagnosis log on the Log tab. The
Diagnosis log displays the following information:
- The status indicator for each power supply or logical volume diagnosed
- The specific power supply or logical volume diagnosed
- The number of times the diagnose test was run
- The number of times the diagnose test failed
- The time required to complete the diagnose test
Note: To clear the contents of the Diagnosis log, click the Clear Diagnosis Log button.
To save the Diagnose log to an HTML file onto a storage device such as a USB disk or diskette, click the Save button.
Error Log
Error log contains a log of any errors that may have occured during Diagnosis testing.
All Logs contain options to Clear the log as well as Save the log to an HTML file.
System Event Log
The System Event Log (SEL) records events relating to system sensors. A System Event Log entry displays the following information:
- Sensor Name - the name of the sensor
- Sensor Type - the type of the sensor
- Description - the description of the event
- Initial Occurrence - the date and time that the event was initially added to the SEL
- Last Occurrence - the date and time that the event was last added to the SEL
- Count - the count of the event
The Clear SEL button will clear the contents of the Error Log.
The Save button will allow the user to save the SEL a file in HTML format.
Note: HP Insight Diagnostics only reports the SEL when the corresponding IPMI driver is loaded for the online environment.
Admin Tab
The Admin tab allows an administrator to clear the SPD Errors and Logs. The following features are available:
- Clear SPD Errors - The Clear SPD Errors operation will clear the spdSingleBit and spdMultiBit correctable errors for the DIMMs if any.
- Clear Error Logs - The Clear Error Logs button will clear the contents of the Error Log.
- Clear Test Logs - The Clear Test Logs button will clear the contents of the Test Log.
- Clear IML Logs - The Clear IML Logs button will clear the contents of the IML entries.
- Clear System Event Logs - The Clear System Event Logs button will clear the contents of the SEL entries.
- Clear Diagnosis Logs - The Clear Diagnosis Logs button will clear the contents of the Diagnosis Log.
Note: This tab will be visible only to users with Administrator privilege.
Help Tab
The Help tab contains a collection of help documents that can be accessed
directly from Insight Diagnostics that describe how to use Insight Diagnostics.
Using Survey
When the Survey tab is selected, the Category and View menus allow you to see
important system configuration information. The Summary view limits the amount
of data displayed, while the Advanced view shows all the data in the selected
category. Regardless of whether you choose Advanced or Summary view, the
following categories of information are available on the Survey menu:

All
- Displays all of the information about the computer.

Overview
- Displays a listing of general information about the computer.
-
Architecture
- Shows the type of bus the computer uses. In addition, if the bus is PCI,
information about the PCI configuration is displayed.
-
Asset Control
- Shows the serial number of the computer (system identification number).
-
Communication
- Shows information about the computer parallel (LPT) and serial (COM) port
settings, Universal Serial Bus (USB), and network controller information.
-
Graphics
- Shows information about the graphics subsystem of the computer. This includes
information about the graphics card, mode, and ROM.

Input Devices
- Shows information about the type of keyboard, mouse, and other input devices
connected to the computer.

Internal Conditions
- Shows information about the health of the computer. This includes fan,
temperature, and power supply information. Available only on Proliant Servers.
-
Memory
- Shows information about all memory in the computer. This includes memory on
the board and any memory modules installed.

Remote Management
- Remote Management (if supported on system) displays information about iLO, RILOE II and iLO3 devices.
-
Miscellaneous
- Shows information obtained from the computer's configuration memory (CMOS),
BIOS data area, Interrupt Vector table, and diagnostics component information.

Operating System
- Shows the type of operating system used by the computer. This view also
includes vital information about the configuration of the operating system.

Resources
- Shows the system device resource usage information. This includes information
about I/O, memory, IRQ, slot, and bus usage.
-
Storage
- Shows information about storage media connected to the computer. This list
includes all fixed disks, floppy drives, and CD-ROM drives.
-
System - Shows product type, processor type and speed, and coprocessor
information. Also shown in this display is information about all ROMs in the
computer.

Firmware - Shows firmware and BIOS revision information for system controllers
and devices.
Comparing Sessions
You can also compare the information from two sessions and view the differences
in any of the above categories by selecting the Compare Configurations sub
tab.

Choose a Survey session from the Configuration 1
drop down box.
-
Choose a Survey session from the Configuration 2
drop down box.
-
Click the View Comparison Results button.
Once the Comparison is loaded, you may choose a View Level or Category the same
way as the Current Configuration display. To view only the changed entries for
the selected category, check the View Changes Only checkbox.
Entries may have the following change status:
-
Unchanged
- this entry is identical in both surveys
-
Changed
- this entry's value differs between the two surveys
-
Added
- this entry did not exist in Configuration 1 but does exist in Configuration 2
-
Removed - this entry existed in Configuration 1 but does not exist in
Configuration 2
To return to the current configuration information, select the Current
Configuration sub tab.
Click Print button to print the configuration comparison details.
Click Save button to save the configuration comparison details to a file.
Saving a Survey Session
To save an HTML formatted Survey report, click the Save link located on the
Survey tab's Current Configuration sub tab and enter a file name. The
Survey HTML file can be viewed by a standard web browser.
Note: To save a complete Survey session, you must select Save Entire Survey(All, Advanced) in the popup box otherwise only the selected portion of the survey will be saved.
To get an XML formatted Survey report, copy the session file from the hpdiags
directory. Survey session files are named using the format: SurveyDATE.xml.
Where DATE is the date and time the session was captured.
Delete a Survey Session

Click the Manage Configurations
button from the Current Configuration sub tab.

Check the sessions listed on the page that you want to delete.
-
Click the Delete button.
Survey Scheduling
-
Click the Schedule Captures
button from the Current Configuration sub tab.
-
Choose either Weekly or Monthly for the capture frequency.
-
Select the days of the week or month that the capture should be taken.
-
Enter the time at which to perform the capture.
Note: Start time is in 24 hour format.

Click OK.
Using Integrated Management Log
The Integrated Management Log sub tab under the Log tab displays the
current entries in the IML. Each event in the IML has one of the following
statuses to identify the severity of the event:

Info
- presents general information about a system event.
-
Repaired
- indicates that this entry has been repaired.
-
Caution
- indicates that a non-fatal error condition has occurred.
-
Critical / Failed - indicates that a component of the system has failed.
The severity of the event and other information in the IML helps to quickly
identify and correct problems, thus minimizing downtime.
The IML has several capabilities to enhance the ability to identify, correct,
and document server health. The following features are supported:

Save
- saves the IML to a file in HTML format
-
Clear IML - clears all IML entries
Note: HP recommends saving the current contents
into a file before emptying the log.
Note: After the IML is cleared, a maintance note event will be added
indicating the time and date that the log was last cleared.

Set selected items to 'Repaired'
- marks all selected entries as repaired
-
Add Maintenance Note - add an event with a user specified description
Note: Maintenance Notes will have a Severity of
'Info' and a Class of 'Maintenance'
